THE FACTS ON YOUTH HOMELESSNESS
4.2 Million Young People Experience Homelessness Each Year
Youth homelessness is a significant and growing problem in the United States. According to a report by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, on any given night, there are over 55,000 young people living on the streets or in shelters, without a stable or safe place to call home.
They are our community’s invisible homeless population. They sleep outdoors, in parks, on the street, in vehicles, on buses, abandoned buildings and other places not meant for human habitation.
The causes of youth homelessness are complex and varied. Many young people are forced out of their homes due to abuse, neglect, or family conflict. Others become homeless due to poverty, lack of affordable housing, or mental health and substance abuse issues. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated these issues, with many young people losing their jobs and being evicted from their homes.
All homeless youth, due to their unstable housing situation and lack of a caring adult are inherently vulnerable to their surroundings. Homelessness can have serious and long-lasting effects on young people’s physical and mental health, education, and employment prospects. Homeless youth are more likely to experience chronic health problems, such as malnutrition, respiratory infections, and mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. They are also more likely to drop out of school, which can limit their job prospects and future earning potential.
Overall, addressing youth homelessness is a critical priority for communities across the United States. At One Heart Foundation, we are committed to the cause of ending youth homelessness. By working together and investing in comprehensive solutions, we can ensure that all young people have a safe and stable place to call home.
